Garage rock! “Owls In The Headlights Of The Sulfur Digging Bulldozer” by The Escatones is actually as surf rock as I’d like for a band who tags themselves as garage, psych, surf, and surf! on Bandcamp. These three songs are highly enjoyable.

“Open Wide” starts the album off with a very smooth surf rock out. The guitar tones are sufficiently reverberated, the melody is plentifully poppy, and the hooks are constant. My favorite part is the trippy guitar solo in the middle.

“Bermuda Beach” is a great name for a song by a surf rock band. The matching guitar and bass at the beginning is really great, and the drum tones are really appropriate. They’re wonderfully deadened to contrast all that guitar reverb. Then another guitar comes in and adds to the beachy jam! This instrumental track is great.

“Out Of Sight Out Of Mind” beings very subtly with some sort of feedback loop in the background of quiet guitars and drums. This might be the strongest track on the album, and it’s definitely the most mature. The chorus achieves a great catchiness that I didn’t really expect from a surf rock song at this tempo. I especially love the yells afterwards.

The Escatones are two dudes from Galveston playing music with whoever they can find. I’m sure they play really fun shows, and apparently they were muumuus when they play. What a sight to see! What a sound to hear! Be sure to check them out at your earliest convenience.
